"Heilstätten Beelitz" Part 1
In the south of Potsdam, in the forest of Beelitz, one can find an old sanatorium, the "Heilstätten Beelitz". Build in the year 1898, at that time, the sanatorium was know as one of the largest and latest hospital complex of buildings in the area around Berlin. The sanatorium's area of expertise was lung disease but during the two world wars the main function of the hospital was to care for wounded soldiers. In 1945, after the second world war when Germany was devided into 4 zones of occupation, the Soviets' "Red Army" turned the sanatorium of Beelitz into a military hospital. Thus, until 1994, the sanatorium of Beelitz was the largest Soviet military hospital beyond the borders of the Soviet Union.
